This tutorial shows you how to create a privacy policy containing a table of cookies your site uses. The main reason for doing this is to comply with the UK cookie law.
Steps
- Install and activate these plugins: oik, oik-privacy-policy and cookie-cat
- Set required fields in oik options > options: company, email and address
- Choose sections to include in the oik options > privacy policy page
- Ensure that the Cookie list section is ticked AND it contains the [cookies] shortcode
- Click on Preview then review the Privacy policy page that will be generated
- Choose the page title for the Privacy policy page and the menu it will be added to (if there is a choice)
- View the generated page and confirm it’s OK

I installed and activated oik-privacy-policy plugin and nothing showed up in the menu. So I uninstalled it and ever since all my pages and articles are returning a 404 file not found. The only thing working is my home page can you help me?
Hey Joe, I’ve not seen “nothing but 404′s” as a result of deactivating oik-privacy-policy. Are you able to access the Dashboard? Perhaps visiting Settings > Permalinks will help.
Did you change anything else, such as WordPress SEO settings?
BTW. I can see the Privacy Policy item in your menu, but can’t access it of course.
Hi Herb and thanks for getting back to me. I found the problem and corrected it. I have wordpress set up so that the “www” was removed. Somehow it got set back to “www” and that was causing the errors. It happened around the same time I tried to install oik privacy plugin and it could be totally unrelated. Some tech support were also trying to correct a error in my header earlier and could have also caused it. I was suspecting the plugin also because when I installed it nothing showed in my menu like it shows on your video so I just removed it. Does your plugin actually require 2 plugins? The cookie one also?
Hi Joe. glad you resolved the 404 problem. If you want to have the privacy policy page list the cookies you site uses then you need to install the cookie-cat plugin AND add the [cookies] shortcode AFTER the text that says
A list of all the cookies used on this website by category is set out below.
We were talking about this at WordCamp UK 2012. I might make some changes to that, if the cookies shortcode is available it adds it automatically.
Hi Joe, just re-read your comment. oik-privacy-policy is dependent upon the oik plugin. If you don’t have oik then there will not be an oik options menu in the dashboard and oik-privacy-policy won’t do a thing.
So in order to get this to work I need to install 2 plugins oik-privacy-policy and cookie-cat. This begs the question-why isn’t this combined into 1 plugin?
After the privacy policy is created and I place it on a page than can I remove both plugins?
There are a couple of reasons why they’re separate.
I wrote privacy policy first
The current privacy policy is primarily for the UK market
Cookie-cat can be used without privacy policy.
You can’t remove cookie-cat UNLESS you copy and paste the generated HTML.
I really Think blog, “oik-privacy-policy
and cookie-cat tutorial – [oik] plugins” was perfect!
Ican’t agree along with you more! At last seems like I personallyfound a blog page worthy of reading through. Thank you, Leland
